Teacher Explores the iPad (for the 1st time)
Sometimes it is best just to try things out...
Mrs. Donoval was very inquisitive and excited about the potential of the iPad but had never touched one. She spent a little time giving the iPad a test drive and came away very impressed. Here are two short videos where we get to see Mrs. Donoval explore two apps, Color & Draw and Scrabble.

How would iPads be used? (teacher ideas)
iPads would be used primarily during center time to provide a richer variety of resources to students and more opportunities for feedback and redirection if needed. We would also like to explore using it on occasion as a whole-class tool in social studies by using the eClicker response system. This is an inexpensive system that is a free App for student iPads and only $9.99 for the host iPad that would allow us to receive immediate student feedback during whole-group instruction, primarily in social studies. Additionally, Apps often provide embedded visual resources that can be used for learning of social studies concepts. It can be used with the Internet.
Frequency and Number Requested: The second grade would like to use 5 iPads per classroom daily for math centers and 5 iPads 3 days per week during reading centers as a reinforcement tool when students are working independently or in groups.
Learning activities would include:
Grammar and Vocabulary – nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prefixes, suffixes, dictionary skills, vocabulary building and correct sentence building.
Spelling – Spelling patterns, practice words, flashcards
Telling Time to the nearest 5 minutes, money practice with coins and bills such as making change, problem-solving math activities
Reading - fluency work, opportunities for reading books
The iPad is different from other traditional resources and as it is interactive, provides instant feedback and redirection if needed, thus creating more time-on-task. It works easily for differentiation as there are numerous Apps and activities within, and is more accessible with quick start-up. Since it is cordless, it creates a more authentic environment for mobility and use. Students could gather around on the floor in teams or small groups or even work on a beanbag chair. They allow for a more fluid learning environment.
